Discover the thrill of mountain biking in Melchsee-Frutt, a high-alpine paradise where scenic trails meet adrenaline-pumping descents. Whereas there are plenty of possibilities up on Melchsee-Frutt, we have prepared our favourite circular route as a proposal for a one day trip. We recommend using e-bikes for this route.
Tour Overview:
Starting Point: Frutt Mountain Resort
Type of the trail: circular
Distance: Approx. 50–60 km (round trip)
Riding time: approx. 4 hours of pure riding time, 5-6 hours including breaks
Elevation Gain: Approx. 1000–1200 meters
Breakfast / First Break:
Before setting off, enjoy a hearty breakfast at the hotel to fuel up for the tour. The hotel team is happy to prepare a packed lunch for you. Be sure to take enough water with you!
Route:
Ride along the well-maintained forest road toward Engelberg. The trail leads through open meadows and gentle hills.
Distance: Approx. 10–12 km
Break Stop 1: Alp Stöckalp
After about 10–12 km, take your first break at Alp Stöckalp. There’s often a small mountain hut or guesthouse where you can enjoy a drink or snack. The views of the surrounding peaks are spectacular.
Activities:
Take in the scenery and breathe the fresh mountain air. The climb here isn’t too steep, but a rest will help you recharge.
Route:
After your break, the trail continues downhill and then slightly uphill until you reach Engelberg. The paths remain smooth and rideable.
Distance: Approx. 10–15 km
Break Stop 2: Engelberg – Lunch Break
Once in Engelberg, take your time for a longer stay. There are plenty of culinary options to recharge. Enjoy a light snack on the terrace at the Palace Bar. For a more refined lunch, the Cattani Restaurant with its beautiful terrace is an excellent choice (check seasonal opening times).
Activities:
Explore the center of Engelberg, visit the famous monastery, or simply enjoy the view of Mount Titlis. Take your time to relax before heading back.
Route:
The return route mostly follows the same path, though there are a few alternative trails depending on your skill level. Some sections are slightly more challenging, so ride carefully on the way back.
Break Stop 3: Gerschni-Alp or Küpfen Alp (depending on the chosen route)
If you take the alternative path via Gerschni-Alp or Küpfen Alp, consider taking an additional break here. These alpine areas are quieter and offer stunning views of the valley and surrounding mountains.
Activities:
These stops are perfect for enjoying the peacefulness of the Alps and taking photos. Breathe in the crisp alpine air and savor the moment.
Route:
The return to Melchsee-Frutt is downhill. Since this is the same path as the outbound route, you’ll get to enjoy the impressive mountain and valley views once again.
Distance: Approx. 10–12 km
Water and Snacks: Always carry enough water, as dehydration can happen quickly in the mountains. Snacks like nuts, energy bars, or fruit are ideal for quick energy boosts.
Break Times: Plan around 10–20 minutes for each short break, depending on how much rest you need. A longer lunch break of about 30–60 minutes in Engelberg is perfect to enjoy the day and recharge.
This way, your tour becomes an unforgettable experience where you not only take in the breathtaking nature, but also have enough time to relax and fully enjoy your surroundings.
Have fun on your mountain bike tour!
